Moving to Cloud Servers: We’re moving all accounts to faster & more redundant “cloud” servers. These servers have redundant CPU, RAM, SSD hard drives, network and power. What this means for you is there is now a very low risk of any downtime as a result of any hardware problem. If your account isn’t on one of our faster servers yet, we’ll be contacting you about moving it in the next few months. These new servers include faster enterprise-grade solid state (SSD) hard drives so you should notice a speed increase after the move.

First off a quick definition of what we’re talking about here;

  • Dedicated Server - A physical server located in a rack. Basically a REALLY big desktop computer with lots of CPU, RAM and disks in it. Pros - Lots of room to add more disk. Cons - If something crashes, we have to be offline while spare parts are swapped in (Knock-on-wood, we haven’t had to do this in a LONG time)

  • Cloud Server - This server uses resources from a pool of redundant power, CPU, RAM and disk. If any of these components has an problem, these resources can be swapped without a second of downtime. Not only is everything redundant, these servers use use enterprise-class solid state drives. These solid state drives are faster and more reliable than mechanical hard disk drives.

We’ve already had a few ‘cloud’ servers like thunder.svaha.com, but our primary server, lightning.svaha.com, is a dedicated physical server. It’s been rock-solid for many years but it’s time we move all the users on it to a ‘cloud’. If your account isn’t on one of our cloud servers yet, we’ll be contacting you about moving it in the next few months.
